Why Homeowners Choose MyAurora for Kitchen Renovation

Typical Kitchen Renovation Experience

  • You are left to source, order and store all kitchen materials on your own
  • Little or no guidance on tiles, fixtures, lighting and finishes that suit your home’s value
  • Messy job site, unreliable timelines and contractors who may not follow Ontario code

Kitchen Renovation Payment Structure

To protect homeowners in Oakville, Hamilton, Milton, Burlington and the west GTA, MyAurora uses a clear, milestone-based payment schedule for kitchen renovation projects. Payments are linked to real progress on site, so you are never paying far ahead of the work.
  • 20% – Contract signing. This initial payment reserves your project in our schedule and covers site visit, detailed measurements, initial design time and preparation of a clear written scope for your kitchen renovation.
  • 35% – Before construction begins (and after permits, if required). Once the design, materials and budget are approved – and any required building permit is issued for your home – we collect the second payment. This allows us to order cabinets, counters and other materials, book trades and prepare for demolition and installation.
  • 35% – After rough-ins and major inspections are passed. The third payment is due when the main construction work and rough-ins are complete and required city and ESA inspections are passed. This typically includes framing or wall changes (if any), plumbing and electrical rough-ins, ventilation and insulation or drywall repairs.
  • 10% – On completion & final homeowner approval. The final payment is due only after the kitchen is fully installed, cleaned and ready to use. We complete a walkthrough with you, list any minor touch-ups, and ensure you are satisfied before final sign-off.
This payment structure provides a transparent, fair approach for kitchen renovation projects in Oakville, Hamilton, Milton, Burlington and the surrounding west GTA, aligning each payment with a clear construction milestone and verified progress.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Kitchen Renovation Contractor

Before you hire anyone to remodel your kitchen in Oakville, Hamilton, Milton, Burlington, Mississauga, Etobicoke and Vaughan, it’s important to ask the right questions. A good kitchen renovation contractor should clearly explain how they handle design, permits, structural changes, plumbing, electrical and ventilation so your project meets Ontario Building Code requirements, passes ESA inspections and adds long-term value to your home.

Ask how the contractor will inspect your current kitchen before starting work. A professional renovation company should review walls, ceilings and bulkheads, existing plumbing and electrical, HVAC and ventilation, flooring, cabinet condition and any signs of moisture or damage. They should also explain how they will protect finished areas of your home with floor coverings, dust control, temporary plastic barriers and safe access while work is underway.

For kitchen renovations, proper design and permitting are critical — especially when removing walls, changing layouts or updating plumbing and electrical. Ask if the contractor provides kitchen design support, prepares permit drawings, submits applications to the city and responds to comments from building officials. Confirm that they understand OBC requirements for structure, fire separation, ventilation, clearances and smoke/CO alarms when the kitchen is open to living or dining areas.

A kitchen that looks beautiful but has poor ventilation or moisture control can quickly develop odours, grease build-up and damage to cabinets and walls. Ask what type of range hood and ducting they recommend, how they plan to vent it outside, and how they protect walls, ceilings and flooring around cooking zones. Discuss materials that are easy to clean and resist steam, grease and daily traffic — especially for busy family kitchens and rental properties.

Kitchen renovations in the west GTA often involve moving sinks, updating dishwashers, adding circuits for new appliances and improving lighting. Confirm that licensed plumbers and electricians will complete the work, that all electrical is inspected by ESA, and that any HVAC or ventilation changes are reviewed for proper airflow and comfort in nearby rooms. Ask how they coordinate trades so rough-ins line up with your cabinet layout and appliance specifications.

    • Are you licensed, insured and WSIB-covered for kitchen renovation work in Ontario?
    • Who is responsible if a worker gets injured or if something in my home is damaged during the project?
    • Do you regularly complete kitchen renovations in Oakville, Hamilton, Milton, Burlington, Mississauga, Etobicoke or Vaughan?
    • Will you provide detailed, written quotes that list scope, materials, permits and timelines?
    • How do you handle change orders if I decide to add or adjust items during the renovation?
    • Can you show examples or references from recent kitchen projects in homes similar to mine?
    • Who will be on site each day – employees, subcontractors, or a mix of both, and who supervises the work?

When you compare kitchen renovation quotes, do more than just look at the total price. Review how each contractor handles design, permits, inspections, materials, disposal and clean-up. Check whether the quote clearly mentions structural work, electrical inspections, plumbing connections, ventilation and finishing details such as backsplash, lighting and trim. Look at online reviews and speak with past clients to confirm that the company’s promises match their actual performance. Be cautious of very low quotes from uninsured handymen — if something goes wrong, they can disappear and leave you dealing with damage, denied insurance claims and the full cost of fixing the work.

Not sure whether to remodel the kitchen yourself, hire a general handyman, or work with a dedicated kitchen renovation company? This comparison shows the typical differences in safety, insurance coverage, code compliance and long-term value for homeowners in Oakville, Hamilton, Milton, Burlington, Mississauga, Etobicoke and Vaughan.

    CriteriaDIY KitchenGeneral HandymanProfessional Kitchen Contractor
Design & Code KnowledgeLimited experience with kitchen layout design, Ontario Building Code, structure and ESA requirements. Some experience, but often no formal design process or detailed drawings for wall changes and utilities.Understands OBC and ESA requirements and designs kitchens to meet clearances, ventilation and safety standards.
Permits & InspectionsHomeowner is responsible for drawings, permits and scheduling inspections with the city and ESA.May avoid permits or leave permits up to you, increasing risk and liability if issues appear later.Prepares drawings, obtains permits and coordinates city and ESA inspections on your behalf.
Structure, Ventilation & MoistureHigh risk of missing structural limits, range-hood ventilation needs and moisture issues around sinks and cooking areas.Basic fixes only; complex problems like beams, load-bearing walls or proper venting may be missed or temporarily covered.Assesses structure, range-hood venting, moisture and heat from cooking before changing walls or closing ceilings.
Trades & EquipmentLimited tools and no network of licensed trades for plumbing, HVAC or electrical work.May use some licensed trades, but coverage and coordination can be inconsistent.Works with licensed plumbers, electricians and HVAC specialists on every kitchen project.
Insurance, WSIB & Liability You carry most of the risk. If someone is injured or damage occurs, your own insurance may not cover unpermitted or non-professional work, leaving you responsible for costs. Many handymen do not carry full liability insurance or WSIB coverage. If serious damage is done, they can walk away, leaving you in limbo with no protection. A professional contractor may later need to undo and redo the work, which can cost nearly twice as much as doing it properly once. Licensed, insured and WSIB-covered crews. Written contracts clearly outline responsibility if something goes wrong, and the company can coordinate repairs or warranty work instead of leaving you to handle damage or insurance issues on your own.
Speed & CoordinationWork is done evenings and weekends, often stretching over many months.Timelines depend on availability; projects can stall if other jobs come up.Planned schedule with coordinated trades, regular updates and defined milestones from demolition to final inspection.
Quality, Safety & ValueFinish may look acceptable, but hidden issues can hurt future resale, appliance performance and safety. Variable quality; lack of documentation and permits can impact insurance, appraisals and make it more expensive when a professional needs to correct and rebuild the work later. Documented, code-compliant work, better resale value, lower risk and a kitchen that is designed, inspected and built to perform well for years.

For most homeowners, especially those planning an open-concept main floor or major kitchen upgrade, hiring a professional kitchen renovation company is the safest and most cost-effective option. You get proper design, permits, inspections, insurance and WSIB-covered crews so your new kitchen in the west GTA is comfortable, functional and protected — without the risk of unfinished projects, disappearing handymen or paying again to fix work that was not done properly the first time.
